Brake Road Safety Week

Safe Roads for AllToday marks the start of Road Safety Week – with the theme being Safe Roads for All.

And in our line of work – it’s important as it brings together communities and professionals to champion keeping our roads safe for everyone.

It’s the road safety charity Brake’s biggest campaign of the year and as a company whose entire raison d’etre is to keep people safe on the roads we fully support it.

Throughout this week the campaign will raise awareness of the key areas of road safety that the Government support including what’s called the hierarchy of road users. It was introduced to the Highway Code back in January.

As a reminder – the hierarchy places those road users most at risk in the event of a collision (e.g. pedestrians/walkers) at the top of the hierarchy.

Before the new rules were introduced drivers had to give way to pedestrians who had started to cross, now the rules go a lot further.

It states that at a junction the motorist should give way to pedestrians crossing or WAITING to cross a road into which you are turning into or from.

In a nutshell it means:

The campaign isn’t just about reminding people of those changes though – it’s about what we can all do to keep people safe on the road.

In 2021 – 27450 people were killed or seriously injured on Great Britain’s roads – a frightening statistic – sadly affecting so many lives.

Did you know a quarter of road accidents involve someone driving for work purposes?  Are you doing all you can as an employer to help keep your staff safe when they’re driving for work? If you’re not sure don’t forget we are here to help.

Road Safety Week 2022 is sponsored by ArvalDHL and VisionTrack and supports the Department for Transport’s Think! Campaign. Brake provides help for bereaved families and those who are seriously injured in road accidents.
